Samsung NX Series camera gets the hands-off treatment
by Donald Melanson, posted Mar 6th 2009 at 7:14PM
Samsung has already offered up plenty of press shots of its new NX Series "hybrid" camera, but we're guessing most folks are still a bit more interested in some up-close, unpolished shots of the not-quite-compact, even if it is being kept just out of the reach of the teeming masses at PMA. In case this one slipped past your radar, the big news here is the camera's use of an APS-C sized image sensor, which is normally only found on full-size DSLRs, and should result in some better than usual shots from a camera this size. Better still, that means you'll also still be able to attach at least a few different lenses to the camera, which you can catch a glimpse of by hitting up the links below.

Gauging Samsung's TL320 OLED Display Point-and-Shoot
By matt buchanan, 6:25 PM on Mon Mar 2 2009, 16,402 views
See what I did there? Cause Samsung's TL320 HD video capable camera has an ooooOLED screen and cool retro analog gauges? So, just how great are they in person?
What I really wanted to do was play back 720p video on the TL320's screen to better divine the OLED difference, but it's pretty early in the dev cycle (it's not coming out till way later in the year) and was so buggy all it would playback is blue static, which wasn't very helpful at all. Looking at stills on the screen side by side with an LCD display on a different Samsung camera, the OLED screen was a little brighter and sharper, but it didn't make my eyes pop out get goo all over the display in the ensuing explosion or anything.
PMA is an annual show where we get to see tomorrow's digital cameras—the ones that'll be populating pockets and purses for the rest of the year. We'll be here for the next couple of days.

Samsung's hybrid NX Series camera: point-and-shoot with DSLR-like image sensor
by Darren Murph, posted Mar 2nd 2009 at 8:00AM

While we still prefer the Micro Four Thirds approach (we love lens selection, so sue us), Samsung's conceptual NX Series is still looking pretty boss for those needing a true (or close to true) point-and-shoot frame. Announced here at PMA, this new "hybrid" camera maintains the slim stature of a standard pocket cam, yet includes an APS-C sized image sensor that is traditionally found on DSLRs. In layman's terms, that means this camera will boast a larger surface area "to gather light and produce higher-quality images than comparable digital camera systems." In order to keep things thin, the electronic viewfinder (EVF) replaces the DSLR mirror box, but details beyond that are scant. The good news, however, is that Sammy plans to commercialize the NX line and have 'em shipping by the second half of this year. Is the P&S-DSLR gap finally being bridged? Guess we'll find out (not so) soon enough; per usual, the full release is just after the break.
Update: It looks like the NX-series does have interchangeable lenses -- a press shot we just received shows what look to be a couple different zooms.

Review: Samsung FullHDcam, HMX-H106 & R10
This review was issued from slashgear.com regarding Samsung new FullHD camcorders, HMX-H106 & HMX-R10 at PMA2009 as follows;
At the booth, it was hard to miss the “around the world” diorama with robotic stuffed animals in great lighting. Obviously, it was set up with a purpose of having spectators try out the cameras with their newer smart detection technology, together with the new camcorders.We had our hands-on the HMX-H106 ($999), which has an internal 64Gb SSD drive, together with an SD/SDHC memory card storage slot. It’s very lightweight with a quick boot-up, and the touch-panel display is very vibrant, detailed and, most importantly, it’s responsive. The only problem we experienced was an inability to shift storage from SSD to SDHC memory while trying to get a few video clips. We talked briefly to Alex Nicolaou, and was told to weigh our opinion until the production model arrives. This one is definitely on my watch list for covering shows because of the small physical size, low weight, and ability to record up to 12 hours of H.264 compressed HD footage with the supplied fast-access 64GB SSD. The presence of a low power consumption SSD also enables longer battery life: it only requires 1/8th of the power of a comparable HDD.
Another model, titled the world’s smallest handy Full HD camcorder, packs a 9-megapixel CMOS image sensor with a 2.7-inch touchscreen LCD. The Samsung HMX-R10 ($549) has a unique lens, angled at 25 degrees, which according to Samsung is “a new standard for ergonomics”, allowing you to record your subjects while reducing stress on the wrist. This one we didn’t have problem recording a video to an SDHC card, but the optical stabilizer function was either not working or didn’t get turned on like it was supposed too. The display, as well as the recorded movie, exhibited motion blur. Sorry, no point for a sample clip here; we’ll have to wait for the review samples to show you that. sourced site: http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-camcorder-gets-video-intro-ssd-based-hmx-h106-and-worlds-smallest-full-hd-hmx-r10-1036999/
